The situation along the Moore Park Beach foreshore is worsening.
Last week’s high tides caused significant erosion out the front of the Surf Club and the problem is growing.
It’s now reached dangerous levels as Bundaberg Regional Council prepares to act under emergency safety provisions.
The foundations of the clubhouse building are now exposed and a structural engineering assessment will be undertaken as soon as possible to outline the most appropriate actions to protect the building from further damage.
Mayor Helen Blackburn says Council is acting without delay to ensure the safety of the community.
“Council crews have been closely monitoring this situation and we are aware that the erosion has worsened to the point where we are concerned for public safety,” Mayor Blackburn says.
“The erosion has not only resulted in a direct drop from the parklands to the beach where staff have cordoned off access but service connections and building foundations are now exposed within the dunes.
“Residents are asked to avoid the area for their own safety and to help prevent any further erosion.
“Unfortunately we’ve seen evidence that people are ignoring the safety fencing that has been put in place.
“Please heed the warnings and do not access this area.”
Mayor Blackburn says Council will continue to provide the community with updates on the situation and any works that will take place.
“We are also liaising with all relevant stakeholders including the building and landowners and relevant State Government departments.”
Residents are asked to use alternate beach access and not to approach the exclusion area from the beach.
