It’s feared the large bushfire that forced Coonarr residents to flee on Monday was deliberately lit.
Police say five blazes started up in the area around the same time.
Member for Burnett Stephen Bennett says the allegations are disappointing.
“We are getting incredibly frustrated with the way people treat that area with rubbish and now they’re lighting fires,” he says.
“This is a real pristine area that’s at risk of being overrun by these ratbags that continually desecrate what is a lovely area.”
It’s further alleged a grass fire at Norville, also on Monday, was deliberately lit.
Police have not confirmed any details about the person, or people, they believe could be involved.
Mr Bennett hopes the alleged firebug is caught.
“Lets hope it’s a deterrent to other people who think that in this fire season lighting a fire is anything but the most ridiculous thing you could ever be thinking of,” he says.
“We are really worried about this fire season and we all need to be vigilant and on our guard to make sure that we protect homes and lives.”
Anyone who has information to assist with investigations is urged to contact police.
