Accused Carjacker Who Stabbed Pregnant Woman Still In Hospital

UPDATE | A man remains under police guard in hospital on Thursday, after being shot by officers on the Bruce Highway at the Sunshine Coast.  

It is claimed the 25-year-old man allegedly stole a ute in Hervey Bay on Wednesday morning before travelling south and attempting to steal another vehicle at Maryborough from a pregnant woman, who was stabbed and witnessed shots being fired around her.  

It sparked a mammoth pursuit, Police used tyre spikes to bring the chase to an end on the Bruce Highway at Nambour.

The incident closed the Highway in both directions and the traffic snarl continued into the evening.  

EARLIER | A 25-year-old man has been arrested in dramatic scenes on the Sunshine Coast, following a string of violent car thefts in the Wide Bay area on Wednesday.  

It will be alleged around 6.25am a man was forced out of his Holden Colorado ute on Watson Street in Hervey Bay by a man armed with a knife.

The man allegedly drove the vehicle to Tinana in Maryborough where he discarded the ute just after 7.30am.

He then broke into a home on Three Mile Road West just before 8:00am where he demanded a vehicle belonging to a woman inside the residence.

The owner of the car, a woman aged in her 30s, refused to comply and sustained a stab wound to her hand during a struggle with the man.

The man produced a firearm and discharged a number of shots before fleeing the scene.

It is further alleged the man then went into another home on River Road and demanded a vehicle belonging to a male resident.

The owner gave the man his keys who then fled in a white sedan.

The vehicle travelled south from Maryborough at speed along the Bruce Highway before it was sighted crashing through roadworks south of Tiaro.

Police then continued to track the vehicle as it proceeded south through Gympie and along the Bruce Highway through the Sunshine Coast.

At 10am the vehicle was intercepted on the Bruce Highway at Parklands where specialist police discharged their firearm at the armed man during a confrontation.

The man was also struck by a passing vehicle during the incident.

He was transported to the Sunshine Coast University Hospital where he remains in a serious condition.

The Bruce Highway was closed following the incident, however, has since reopened.

The Criminal Investigations Branch and Forensic Crash Unit is continuing investigations into the incidents.

The Ethical Standards Command has commenced a critical incident investigation into the police response with oversight by the Crime and Corruption Commission.

EARLIER | Police will provide an update on a string of incidents involving stolen vehicles in the Wide Bay area on Wednesday.  

Around 10:00AM, Police intercepted a vehicle on the Bruce Highway at Parklands after officers tracked it from Maryborough.

A man was taken into custody at the scene and is being transported to the Sunshine Coast University Hospital.

The Bruce Highway is in the process of partially reopening in both directions, however, drivers are warned to expect delays.

EARLIER | The Bruce Highway is closed in both directions at Nambour due to a police incident.

Northbound traffic is being diverted at Nambour Connection Road (exit 210) at Parklands.

Police have confirmed that a car was intercepted on Nambour Connection Road at Parklands.  

The driver had been pursued around 153 kilometres from Maryborough where he is accused of being involved in a violent carjacking.

A woman was allegedly assaulted by the man at Tinana before he stole her car.

Police have confirmed the man was armed but wouldn't say what with.    

Seven News is reporting that a man may have been shot at the scene.  

This incident is ongoing.
