Budding doctors now have the chance to study in their own backyard.
University of Queensland is set to offer its Doctor of Medicine program right here in the Wide Bay from 2023.
Students will complete their first two years in Brisbane before heading back to Bundaberg or Rockhampton.
But from 2025, the full degree will be offered locally.
Head of Rural Clinical School Riitta Partanen says the program aims to keep doctors in regional and rural areas.
"What we know from our current program is that students enjoy the small-student-numbered cohort, the very hands on experiences they get," Ms Partanen says.
"If we give students a positive experience learning in rural and regional areas, they are more likely to remain or return."
