A lucky encounter for operators of a popular whale watching tour, with the first whales of the season spotted off the coast of Bundaberg.

Lady Musgrave Experience caught a glimpse of two humpbacks off the coast of Bundaberg at the weekend, months before the official whale watching season kicks off.

Owner Brett Lakey says it's rare to see the animals near the coast before July.

"We spotted our first two on the weekend when we were returning back from Lady Musgrave Island ... maybe 100 metres from the boat, they were travelling north," Mr Lakey says.

"All the mothers and calves, and all the adults round up the start of the season when they're making their way north and south also.

"But it's quite unique to see them so early so close."
