A $1.1 million upgrade to a popular four-wheel drive track in Burrum Coast National Park is now complete, helping keep the track open for longer while protecting surrounding bushland from damage.
The works have strengthened six creek crossings, improved drainage and upgraded 9.5 kilometres of Beach Road through the Kinkuna section.
The upgrade responds to strong community calls for improved access following repeated wet season closures and will make it easier for visitors to enjoy one of the region’s premier coastal destinations.
Importantly, the works will also help safeguard the park’s unique environmental values by reducing the likelihood of illegal track creation that can damage sensitive vegetation, foredune systems and wildlife habitat.
Home to threatened wallum heath communities, red goshawks, little terns and nesting marine turtles, Burrum Coast National Park is one of the Wide Bay’s most significant conservation areas.
Queensland’s Minister for the Environment and Tourism Andrew Powell said the upgrades would strengthen Burrum Coast National Park’s reputation as one of the areas premier outdoor destinations.
“This is an extremely popular camping and four-wheel driving destination and the Crisafulli Government is proud to deliver these upgrades to deliver positive outcomes for the environment and tourism in the Burnett region,” Minister Powell said.
“Through Destination 2045, we have a commitment to conserving and enhancing our protected areas now and for future generations.
Brett Lynch from the Bundaberg 4WD Club said the Burrum Coast National Park was a very popular 4WDing and camping destination.
“This work to keep these areas open and accessible is greatly appreciated and welcomed by the community,” Mr Lynch said.
“We are extremely lucky to have access to such a beautiful area so close to town.”
