The traditional owners of Lady Musgrave Island and Coral Cay Lagoon have been given a boost in their bid to protect the Great Barrier Reef.

The Taribelang Aboriginal Corporation awarded $200,000 for a vital research project – which includes programs to train disengaged youth to become rangers, restore habitats, reef monitoring, and bird surveys.

Taribelang’s CEO Bec Domaile said the funding would help deliver long term benefits for the region.

“The funding will support on-Country work, transport and equipment, specialist training, and partnerships with tourism businesses and environmental experts, building long-term capacity for Traditional Owner leadership in reef protection and cultural tourism,” she said.

The Member for Burnett, Stephen Bennett, said the funding outcome is an incredible announcement for the community.

“This initiative will build local skills, create jobs, and strengthen connections to Country for the next generation,” he said.

“No-one is more passionate or better placed to care for our land and sea than the people who have done so for generations.”

The group is one of 11 across the state to receive a share of $2 million in funding.
