A development application has been approved which will see up to 600 chickens added to a local farm.

A Moore Park Beach Farm which grows sugar cane, peanuts and sweet potatoes, will soon have a caravan to home free range chickens.

The purpose-built caravan will travel between three pasture areas every four weeks allowing the chickens to naturally fertilise the soil improving paddock health.

According to the development application, the mobile chicken caravan will measure 2.5m by 10m and includes the following features:

  • Capacity to house 600 chickens
  • Rollaway nesting boxes
  • Eight pullout shades/shelter doors on lockable gas struts
  • Conveyor belt for egg collection
  • Solar powered auto opening and closing nesting boxes

Mobile feed and water trailers are also included.

The development application states that the aim of the overall project is to integrate regenerative agricultural practices to the existing cropping activities at the property.

The recent approval means egg production can be added to the farm without impacting crop growth while, overall, helping to support long term sustainable land use.
