It’s been a long time coming, but construction is officially underway on the New Bundaberg Hospital.

Early works to establish access to the new hospital site via an extension of Johanna Boulevard, near Eggmolesse Street, were completed in March 2023.

Design and enabling works have been underway since then, ahead of major construction.

The build is expected to create around 2,887 local construction jobs before it is complete in late 2027, weather and building conditions permitting.

CIMIC Group’s CPB Contractors are delivering early works which will involve earthworks, piling, roadworks and the establishment of in-ground services.

The new hospital will provide an additional 121 beds for the region as well as an expanded emergency department, additional operating theatres and a wider range of outpatients and diagnostic services.

Health Minister Shannon Fentiman says it’s a landmark project for Bundaberg.

“Once this new modern hospital is complete, it will help us to attract and retain more skilled health workers to the region,” she says.

“I’m so glad that we’re already planning for their needs and considering housing options for once we’re up and running.”

The State Government is also looking into a broader health and education hub around the site for teaching and training opportunities.

“The plan will deliver a strategic blueprint to guide decision-making, development, and investment to support the establishment of this new precinct,” says Minister for State Development and Infrastructure Grace Grace.

“It’s all about making the most of all the social and economic development opportunities the hospital will bring, and ensuring services are there for this fast growing community – including housing for our front line workers – which is expected to grow by 7,700 new residents by 2035.”

Wide Bay Health and Hospital Service Chief Executive Debbie Carroll says the sod turning is a special day for the town and broader community.

“I’ve been involved in this project from the very beginning, and it’s been rather emotional to stand here today and witness what is undoubtedly one of the biggest milestones to date,” she says.

“I know how much our community needs this new state-of-the-art hospital, so it’s enormously gratifying to know they’ll start to see physical works happening onsite.”
