Horror weekend on Wide Bay Burnett roads

Police are pleading with motorists to take care after five people died on local roads over the long weekend.

A motorcyclist was killed in Hervey Bay on Saturday afternoon, while in the Burnett a 21-year-old Nanango man died in another crash.

At Imbil, near Gympie, a 19-year-old was killed after his car ran into a tree.

While in Bundaberg, two men died in a single-vehicle crash at Kalkie early Sunday morning.

Around 3am, a Ford Falcon was travelling on Mcgills Road when it left the roadway and crashed into a raised sugarcane railway line.

Two of the passengers, a 37-year-old Nundah man and 39-year-old Rubyana man, died at the scene.

The driver, a 26-year-old Bundaberg East man, and passenger, a 24-year-old Bundaberg North woman, were taken to Bundaberg Base Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Acting Superintendent Paul Algie says any life lost is one too many.

“Unfortunately the accidents this weekend, especially in the Wide Bay Burnett, have been caused by speed, alcohol or inattention,” he says.

“We know the fatal five cause most of our crashes so drivers I ask you to please travel safely.

“This weekend we have lost sons, wives, sisters and fathers.

“This tragedy affects too many families.”
