Bundaberg’s Year 10, 11, and 12 students are encouraged to apply for the national ‘My First Speech’ competition.

The Federal Member for Hinkler, David Batt, visited his former high school, Bundaberg State High, to make the announcement and call-out.

“This is a chance for our local Hinkler students to put a national spotlight on the issues that matter most to them,” Mr Batt said.

“I hope this competition gives young people a head start and unearths our future leaders.”

The competition offers Bundaberg youth the opportunity to write a 90-second speech on any topic.

The winner from each year group will travel with a parent or guardian to Parliament House in Canberra to deliver their speech in person – in addition to participating in workshops to understand Australia’s democratic and legislative processes.

Bundaberg State High’s acting principal, Belinda Arnold, said it gives her students a chance to achieve on a national level.

“The students will learn that you need to listen to others and represent their cohort as authentically as possible, and the issues they raise resonate with others,” Ms Arnold said.
