A snorkeller has been airlifted to hospital after being bitten by a shark near Lady Elliot Island.
The man in his 50s suffered puncture wounds to his hand and a deep cut to his right arm after encountering the shark while snorkelling on a shallow reef off the Western side of the island, yesterday morning.
The LifeFlight helicopter was tasked by Retrieval Services Queensland at 8.27am to the scene, with the man flown to Bundaberg Hospital in a stable condition.

As a precaution the western snorkelling zones on the island were closed until further notice.
The type of shark isn’t known at this stage.
