Story Dogs is a literacy support program that helps children improve their reading skills and confidence in a relaxed, supportive environment. The program pairs a child with a trained dog and volunteer handler for weekly one-on-one reading sessions throughout the school year. Using the calm and non-judgmental presence of the dog, children read at their own pace while building comprehension and enjoyment of books. Based on the internationally recognized Reading Education Assistance Dogs (R.E.A.D.) model, the program creates positive and encouraging learning experiences for young readers. There are currently six Story Dogs teams supporting schools across the Bundaberg region, including Burnett Heads, Sharon, Bargara, Elliott Heads, Bundaberg North and St Joseph’s. The program is now seeking an additional volunteer team to help support students at Thabeban State School.
