Bundaberg social housing update

September 7, 2023 6:38 am in by

Community groups are jumping on board to see 60 new social housing units constructed in Walkervale.

Organisations that currently use the site have recently met with St Vincent de Paul Society, who is overseeing the project in partnership with the State Government.

Bundaberg MP Tom Smith says organisations are figuring out how they can continue operating from different locations to make way for the build as construction is expected to start next year.

“The big thing out of that meeting is that all of the different community organisations were very, very happy that project was going ahead,” he says.

“That’s what’s very important is that people realise that there is a need in Bundaberg to ensure that we are providing more social housing and that we are doing more around affordable housing.”

The Housing Minister was in Bundaberg on Wednesday to inspect two social housing duplexes at Avenell Heights which are almost complete.

Minister Meaghan Scanlon says immediate funding is helping families in need as more projects come online.

“Right now in the Bundaberg region we’ve supported 23 families in accommodation, that’s right now, and so that gives you an idea of the different types of support we are providing to people while we build more home,” she says.

“We provide rental grants, rental subsidies, of up to $10,000 to help people maintain their private tenancy.

“We also provide funding to specialist homelessness services to help people with temporary accommodation.”
