A major safety upgrade to a busy, central Bundaberg roundabout will get underway in September with motorists advised to expect changed traffic conditions.
Bundaberg Regional Council is notifying residents early ahead of major works at the George and Targo Streets intersection, that will include safety improvements.
The work will happen in two stages, the first beginning in late September, weather permitting, with access to the many businesses in the area to remain open throughout.
Stage 1 will see the renewal of the ageing box culverts over Saltwater Creek on George Street as part of Council’s ongoing asset management program.
The culverts will be replaced before the road is reinstated with a new footpath and fencing to provide safer, compliant access for pedestrians and cyclists.
The George Street Culvert Renewal is jointly funded by Bundaberg Regional Council and the Queensland Government.
Stage 2, expected to begin in mid-January next year, will focus on upgrading the roundabout itself and will improve visibility for motorists.
Improvements also will also include safer entry and exit paths for motorists, pedestrians and cyclists with raised wombat crossings to create more visible crossing points.
The George and Targo Street Intersection Upgrade is funded through the Australian Government’s Black Spot Program.
Bundaberg Region Mayor Helen Blackburn said the works represented an important investment in community safety while ensuring a key transport route remained fit for purpose into the future.
“These works are about making a busy intersection safer for everyone who uses it, whether they’re driving, walking or riding,” Councillor Blackburn said.
“As well as renewing ageing infrastructure beneath the road, we’re delivering safety improvements that respond directly to recommendations from an independent Road Safety Audit.
