Environment Minister Leanne Linard has released a statement about the Woodgate sand nourishment project.

Around a hundred residents rallied this week to have the process sped up, worried about their homes and foreshore being lost in the upcoming storm season.

The work was meant to start in March, but an approval was revoked.

“While the assessment of applications for marine park permits is an operational matter for my department, it is necessary for me to state the facts in response to claims being made by the Member for Burnett and Bundaberg Regional Council regarding the Woodgate sea wall project,” says Minister Linard.

“I am advised that the Department of Environment and Science received an application from Council for the project on 21 July. The department prioritised the assessment of the application and the marine parks permit was approved on 13 September.

“Contrary to claims being made, the marine parks permit does not prohibit Council from undertaking works during nesting season. The permit requires Council to seek approval from the department before carrying out any works during the nesting season to ensure appropriate measures are put in place to minimise any potential impacts on marine turtle nesting.

“I would encourage Bundaberg Regional Council to apply for approval from my department to undertake the works. My department advises that Council’s application would again be prioritised.”

It’s understood Council will be applying.
