Posters and drink toppers will soon fill Bundaberg pubs and clubs in a bid to clamp down on drink spiking.

Police say it’s difficult to know just how common the activity is because it usually goes unreported, as do sexual assaults which often stem from spiking.

The posters have information about how to report criminal activity and where to go if you’re in trouble.

Senior Constable Rowan Treiguts says foil stickers are being rolled out as well to cover drinks.

“It prevents people from actually placing anything in a glass but also to get out there and give that information,” he says.

“As you’re drinking you can either scan the QR code that’s on there or read the numbers and the information that’s there.”

President of the local Safe Night Precinct Lloyd Finnis hopes the initiative will make a meaningful difference.

“What we find is a lot of people are afraid to step forward to say something and with this advertising … if they see the logo there they think about it, they take it on their phone, they open up the app and it guides them in the right direction on how to seek the right help.”

The program is happening right across the Wide Bay Burnett and workers are also being trained up to spot the signs of someone in distress.

This project’s been funded by the National Drug Strategy Law Enforcement Funding Committee and Athole Masonic Lodge.
