Bundaberg and Burnett residents have been urged to donate their old mobile phones to save a life.

It’s part of the DV Safe Phone initiative that collects, repurposes, and gifts mobile phones to victims of domestic and family violence.

Member for Burnett Stephen Bennett says his office is an official collection point and is encouraging the community to get on board.

“A mobile phone is something many of us take for granted,” says Mr Bennett.

“But did you know your old phone could literally save a life?

“These phones provide a lifeline to survivors of domestic violence so they can call for help when it’s needed most.

“It’s important to remember that domestic and family violence is not just physical, it can manifest itself in many ways.

“It’s not always about conflict, it’s about power and control.

“By donating your old phone, you can give survivors back some of the control and ensure that no call for help goes unanswered.”

Edon Place DFV Programs Coordinator Kyle Terare says this initiative directly supports local people who are escaping domestic and family violence.

“As frontline Domestic & Family Violence Practitioners, we know having access to a phone can help women stay connected, document abuse that could assist with holding abusers accountable, and contact
support services, especially if their current phone is compromised,” he says.

“We have seen an increase in technology abuse and stalking through malware or spyware.

“Having a Safe Phone to be able to provide directly to Clients can form part of that Client’s Individual Safety Plan.”
